Aldo Shoes

Their first two shops were in Central London and Mobility Engineering supplied the conveyors to transport the shoes from the front entrance (via trap doors on the main high streets) down to the basement where the shoes were stored. The third shop (Camden, London) had two conveyors, the first was for the same function as previously supplied, but the second conveyor was designed to be a focal point of the store, being located at the front of the store in the main window, travelling from ground floor to first floor.

Since then, Aldo have opened many stores throughout the UK, and all of their shops, situated on high streets, house our interfloor belt conveyors.


Futaba-Tenneco UK Ltd (Burnley), who produce steel components for one of the world's largest car producers, had their facility full of fork trucks and steel stillages. There were 2 distinct areas which needed to be looked at. Firstly, the health and safety implication of the sheer amount of fork trucks travelling around the facility, and secondly, their need to organise and increase productivity.

After initial trials, using simple gravity tracking (rollers), it was obvious that a more bespoke system was required, given that we needed to utilise 2 and 3 tiered conveying, coupled with trying to achieve a more cost effective result.

As the tote bins (weighing around 20Kgs) and wooden slave boards (weighing around 200Kgs) were flat bottomed, the first 2 cells were installed using a mixture of steel and plastic skatewheels, which worked incredibly well.

LuK Limited

When LuK first approached us to look at a current system they had for transporting brake discs from their machine to end of line (for packing), they were using a very expensive power and free loop system, which was having frequent motor burn out (overloading) problems.

After the initial site visit, it became evident that such an elaborate system wasn't needed. Instead, a more simple indexing system could be used. This would have been an ideal situation using modular belt conveyors, but unfortunately, the underside of the discs have a boss that hangs below. With this in mind, we decided to use twin chains (with rubber tops).

The system needed to be capable of hand 40 off double stacked discs, which led to us using 2 twin chain conveyors, with a traversing unit at the infeed which could deliver parts to either line, depending on the type of disc. This has worked extremely well, freeing up man hours, no down time and a much smaller footprint than the original system, allowing more free area around the machine.

Mobility Engineering Belt Conveyors

Belt conveyors can be either PVC or PU and these types of conveyors are ideal for industries such as food and pharmaceuticals where strict hygiene standards are required and areas must be cleaned and washed down.

Mobility Engineering manufactures both the "traditional" type of belt conveyors alongside modular belt conveyors. The difference between the two is that the modular belt conveyor is constructed as a series of linkis which can be individually designed to suit the particular application of the customer.


Belt Conveyors 

The traditional conveyors are still widely used, as they are also very cost effective in comparison to a modular belt conveyor. If a conveyor is required for picking and packing then a traditional belt conveyor is likely to be recommended. If the belt is to be in direct contact with food products then food grade PU belting is also recommended. 

Modular Belt Conveyors

Modular belting has various benefits over the traditional PVC/PU belt. It has excellent durability and can withstand different temperatures. Modular belt conveyors can have different features built in including open grids where air and water can easily be passed through the belt, or a grip can be included where belts are used on an incline.

What to Consider When Buying a Conveyor

Conveyors are used to move products around within a business. Many people think of conveyors as huge, heavy pieces of machinery (which they can indeed be), but even small businesses can make use of conveyors for packaging and transportation of products. 

What You Should Consider When Investing In A Conveyor

1. Speed: How many products do you need to be moved in a specific amount of time, this will help you decide on the speed of the system you require.

2. Power: Do you require a conveyor which is powered by a motor, and if so how powerful a motor do you require? Or will you be able to work with a gravity roller or unpowered conveyor?

3. Noise: Are there any noise level requirements that you need to be aware of, i.e. there may be regulatory requirements that you need to adhere to.

4. Space: How large a space do you have for your conveyor? You need to take into account room for staff and healthy and safety requirements.

5. Costs: You will need to take into account the initial costs of the conveyor, and then the operational and maintenance costs.

Ball Tables

You may or may not have heard of ball tables or ball transfer units, but these are extremely useful bit of kit which can be used to allow the manual transition of objects between machinery and/or other conveyor systems. 

Ball Tables and Transfer Units Enable:

1. Objects to be transferred in any horizontal direction accross the surface.
2. They are simple in construction, so cost effective but allowing objects to be moved across areas easily.
3. They can easily be constructed in many different sizes.
4. They are sealed against damage from dust and water.

Pottery Kiln Conveyors and The Potteries Revival

The potteries capital, Stoke-on-Trent has, for several years, been hosting the British Biennial Ceramics festival and the BBC has been airing The Great British Pottery Throw Down, a sort of Bake Off with clay, filmed at Stoke’s Middleport pottery factory. Behind these events is the fact that the old pottery district in Stoke is looking much healthier than it did a decade ago, when it may have collapsed altogether. 

This is due to the fact that there has been a revival in table and giftware and exports have risen from the area by nearly 50% over the last decade. The potteries have benefited from substantial new investment in both technology and factories in recent years with names such as Waterford, Wedgwood, Royal Doulton and Wade leading the way. The potteries also lead the way with designer pottery such as the Emma Bridgewater designs (sold at John Lewis). 

So what has changed and why has there been investment in the pottery factories? One of the main reasons is that US and Japanese customers, in particular, have become increasingly averts to purchasing premium wares branded under the English potteries name but which have been manufactured in Asia and China. Stoke wares are considered to be amongst the highest quality in the world and customers want their high end pottery brands to have the Made in England stamp.

Mobility Engineering are very proud to be amongst the suppliers for the Stoke pottery industry, supplying them with batt return systems.  These conveyors are used to store and return pottery and table wares to and from the kiln system. They allow the pottery factory to maximise their kiln times throughout a 24 hour shift, with minimal staffing levels during the night.

Choosing The Right Conveyor Belt For Your Business

Choosing the right conveyor belt for your business involves taking several factors into consideration. These factors include:

  • The product(s) being conveyed
  • The size and weight of the product
  • How fast the product needs to move along the conveyor
  • Where the conveyor will be situated
  • Will the conveyor be on an incline or a decline

The main types of belted conveyors we produce at Mobility Engineering are:

Pvc/Pu Belt Conveyors

The traditional Pvc/Pu belt conveyor system is still widely used due to it being more cost effective than the more modern modular belting, and in instances such as horizontal packing, picking or assembly lines etc, we would generally propose using smooth PVC, or where the belt is in contact with food we would recommend food grade PU.

If an elevation is required we would recommend a grip face rubber belt, although if the angle of inclination exceeds approximately 24 degrees the belt would have to include flights.

Many belts have a woven back which helps grip the end and return rollers, and in addition to this we also supply belts that have tracking strip profiles underneath which folds down over the steel skid base, therefore no tracking is required.

Modular Belt Conveyors

Modular (plastic) belting is now being used more frequently on belt conveyor systems because of it's durability and it's multi-functional properties. Modular belting is generally constructed from either polypropylene (temperature range of +5 degrees to +105 degrees), polyethylene (temperature range of -40 degrees to +60 degrees) or polyacetal (temperature range of -40 Degrees to +60 Degrees).

As it is a series of links, the belt can be constructed to suit the application. e.g. the links can be very narrow to allow small end drums for transferring products. Or, the belt can be an opened top flush grid to allow air or water to be passed through the belt. Or, the belt can have a radius flush grid for use on bends. The modular belt can also incorporate a grip top for inclines.

How Conveyors Can Go Green!

In 2018 there is no "right" way to go green. Different companies are approaching the green initiatives challenge of going green in their own ways, one way of which is making simple changes to the way conveyors are installed and used in an industrial setting

For companies, “going green” means doing business in such a way as to be environmentally friendly rather than causing harm to the environment. A simple example would be installing energy-efficient bulbs that switch off automatically when nobody is at the workplace, or to set up an in-house recycling system.

Some Important Facts About Going Green!

  • Cost Attached – Perhaps the biggest concern with going green are the costs associated with it. Energy-efficient systems will always cost more than their non-energy-efficient counterparts. A business needs to look at this additional cost and balance it out against the benefits that come with it.

  • These are conveyors that are designed and built to be energy-efficient, from the ground up.
  • Organizations that are serious about being eco-friendly will have to replace their existing conveyor systems to get the full eco-friendly benefits.
  • An eco-friendly system comes with a narrow conveyor belt by design. This reduces energy consumption while keeping the efficiency similar to standard sized conveyors.

Here Are Ways To Be More Energy Efficient

  • Energy-Efficient Motors – The first step towards modifying your existing conveyor system would be to replace its existing motors with those that are energy-efficient. This simple change can reduce energy bills by almost 5%, which adds up to lower costs and higher eco-benefits over time.
  • Automatic Sleep Controls – There are times when the conveyor is running but isn’t actually ‘conveying’ anything. Automatic sleep controls, also known as Warehouse Control Systems, can turn off the motors when they sense that nothing is on the belts. If the belts were monitored by workers, there could always be human error or negligence coming into play, which leads to energy loss. Automatic systems prevent this loss.
  • Regenerative Energy – There are motors that come with the ability to capture spent energy. Energy thus captured is moved on to other equipment and it can also be fed back to the main grid. Ultra capacitors are usually part of such systems.
  • Variable Speed Drives – Installation of variable speed drives is another way of enhancing existing conveyor systems and making them more energy-efficient. Single speed drives are typically running either too fast or too slow, leading to energy loss.
  • Motor Driven Rollers – Motor driven rollers are an alternative to conveyor technologies, especially at junction points where transfers as well as mergers commonly occur. Of course, they are expensive but they consume lower energy and increase the overall efficiency of the system. Going for an all-motor driven roller conveyor is cost prohibitive, but you could also opt for a hybrid system that is more cost-effective.
  • Saving the environment and “going green” is a responsibility that must be shared by every business. That is where modifying existing systems or overhauling them entirely becomes part of the picture. Either of these options may seem like an added cost with no immediate financial returns.,However, appreciation of the larger environmental picture and reduced consumption will make for a worthwhile investment in the long run!

You Tube is a great way for us to display our conveyor systems and materials handling equipment, and also gives prospective clients a good idea of what we can achieve for them.
