Going Green With Conveyors

For the last several years, a green movement has swept the globe, and as we are all aware during the last week we had World Earth Day. Consumers, organisations, and large corporations are all now moving toward green initiatives. Whether in packaging, recyclable materials, or energy efficient production, these programs have all lead to more earth conscientious workplaces as well as saved overheard spend.

However, in an industry filled with automation and machinery, the thought of going green might seem like a faraway dream. Luckily, new innovations in conveyor technologies have led to the possibility of greener business practices in the fields of materials handling and automation.

What Does Going Green In Conveyors Mean?

For any industry, going green can be interpreted in different ways, but for those in the materials handling industry, going green consists of minimising the amount of energy and materials being used in our systems. It also consists of ensuring our material handling equipment and systems positively affect employees. This means all machinery should be safe, low noise, and operate as cleanly as possible.

The Cost Concern

While going green might be a possibility, many businesses ask if the investment in green material handling initiatives is really worth the price and if it will eventually save money. There are several ways to look at a green investment. In some cases, a business might be able to afford a new, more eco-friendly system. In other cases, a new motor can be enough to save on energy costs and establish an eco-friendly business plan. Whatever an organisation’s situation might be, we will explore a few ways in which going green with conveyors can save money.

Eco-Friendly Conveyor Systems

There are a few ways to compare conveyor options and determine which one will take an organization in an eco-friendly direction. Organizations prioritizing green initiatives might want to overhaul existing systems for something more earth conscientious. If this is the case, there are several options to compare. For example, when considering belt conveyors, you might find that a narrow belt conveyor performs the same amount of sortation per minute as well as have the same initial investment cost as other systems, while cutting energy use significantly. Other items to compare and consider in conveyor sortation systems can include how much materials are needed, whether or not a system requires lower maintenance over another conveyor, and if it provides low noise for employee safety. Each of these meets the criteria of going green.

Our team of specialist engineers at Mobility Engineering recently designed and manufactured a powered roller conveyor (chain to chain) which is to be used for conveying various widths of sheet steel.

The design included a pneumatic diverter which will send various sizes of sheet steel to the edge of the conveyor ready for the next operation.

Our video shows you exactly how the chains and rollers work together, and as we say, it's all in the design! Our team works with out clients at the design stage so that the client ends up with a machine which is exactly to their requirements.

One of our recent projects was to design and install a system for a client which would be able to convey and transfer containers of fragranced oils which are open so need to be treated with care.

Our team worked together to produced a 24 VDC powered roller conveyor combined with a goods lift which allows zero pressure accumulation of the containers of oils. The system has been designed to work in a smooth and controlled manner so that the oils do not spill whilst in transit.

Recently we shared on our blog a conveyor system our team had designed and supplied to one of our longstanding customers. It was a modular belt conveyor system which included a decline and merge system for a large packing company.

We decided to share this again as, not only has it has been one of our most popular videos on our You Tube channel, but also because it shows some snippets of our design process, showing on how we start with a design, to how it is built and installed and subsequently how it works and integrates with the client's other systems when installed!

Belt Conveyors

Posted by Sarah Bardsley on Thursday, 28 March 2019 at 15:15:04

Pvc/Pu Belt Conveyors are generally used on assembly and packing lines or in clean areas such as the food and pharmaceutical industries. The traditional Pvc/Pu belt conveyor system is still widely used due to it being more cost effective than the more modern modular belting, and in instances such as horizontal packing, picking or assembly lines we would generally suggest using smooth PVC, or where the belt is in contact with food we would recommend food grade PU.

Modular plastic belting is now being used more frequently on belt conveyor systems because of it's durability and it's multi-functional properties. Modular belting is generally constructed from either polypropylene, polyethylene, or polyacetal. As it is a series of links, the belt can be constructed to suit the application. e.g. the links can be very narrow to allow small end drums for transferring products. Alternatively, the belt can be an opened top flush grid to allow air or water to be passed through the belt or the belt can have a radius flush grid for use on bends. The modular belt can also incorporate a grip top for inclines.

If an elevation is required we would recommend a grip face rubber belt, although if the angle of inclination exceeds approximately 24 degrees the belt would have to include flights. Many belts have a woven back which helps grip the end and return rollers, and in addition to this we also supply belts that have tracking strip profiles underneath which folds down over the steel skid base, therefore no tracking is required.

Here is a playlist of Mobility Engineering pvc/pu belt conveyors and modular plastic conveyors which have been installed at customers' premises:

One of our latest projects has been to design and install a conveyor for the transport of chocolate food products. The conveyor we decided to use was a flighted belt conveyor, which allows the food products, after they have been coated in chcolate to travel up an elevation and around onto a packing line.

The conveyor is fully constructed from 304 Stainless Steel with a PU flighted belt which is to FDA standards, which was perfect for our client's requirements.

The Chain Driven Roller Conveyor or Pallet Roller Conveyor is the most robust and heavy duty of the powered conveyor series, and is predominantly used for heavier products such as pallet/drum handling and storage, where the product is usually fed onto the conveyor by a machine or fork truck.

Powered Roller Conveyor systems comprise various components that are designed for both heavy duty usage and flexibility. They consist of sprocketed thick walled rollers, chain to chain or tangential (one common chain) drive mechanism, a fully enclosed side frame and an external shaft mounted motor.

Here are some of our most recent chain driven roller conveyors which have been installed with our customers.

Powered Roller Conveyors

Powered roller conveyors, as opposed to gravity roller conveyors, are much more reliable and versatile with regards control and process flow. Being powered, you are in control of how fast the product goes from A to B, plus the powered roller conveyor can have the added benefit of accumulation.

Lineshaft Powered Roller Conveyors

Lineshaft Powered Roller Conveyors are purposely used when situations require either the simple conveying of products or back to back accumulation, but with as little pressure on the leading product as possible (although depending on the exact application, they can easily be adapted to become zero pressure accumulation systems).

The Lineshaft Powered Roller Conveyor is the more light duty of the powered roller conveyors, handling products that are typically around 25/30kg, such as cardboard boxes, plastic tote boxes, etc. Typical scenarios for the use of this type of conveyor are : Order picking lines/stations, production lines, packaging lines, bar coding sortation systems and obviously the simple movement from A to B.

Lineshaft Conveyors provide an economical solution to conveying and accumulating items with a firm base. The rollers are powered from a drive shaft - mounted beneath the rollers and extending the full length of the conveying bed - and are driven via elastomer belts.

Gravity Roller Conveyors from Mobility Engineering

Posted by Sarah Bardsley on Friday, 22 February 2019 at 16:19:41

Filed under: Gravity, Business, Videos, Industry

Gravity Roller Conveyors are one of the most useful, popular and, perhaps, one of the most basic and hard wearing conveyors designed by Mobility Engineering. They can be used in so many different areas, such as for conveying trays, slave boards, cardboard boxes, plastic totes or, basically, anything with a plastic bottom. They will easily and simply transport products from A to B without any form of power!

Yes, gravity roller conveyors use the force of gravity to move products, keeping everything simple and extremely cost effective. Products can be freewheeled by hand or a slight decline can be introduced to allow the products to fall over the length of the conveyor.

Because Gravity Roller Conveyors are extremely modular they can be utilised in many ways. They can form a crucial role when linked to the end of a powered system, for such purposes as packing and accumulation, or they can actually form full production lines, such as PC Assembly, Bedding, Industrial Batteries, etc.

Here are some of our gravity roller conveyors from Mobility Engineering in action!
