Going Green With Conveyors

Posted by Sarah Bardsley on Wednesday, 24 April 2019 at 21:35:53

For the last several years, a green movement has swept the globe, and as we are all aware during the last week we had World Earth Day. Consumers, organisations, and large corporations are all now moving toward green initiatives. Whether in packaging, recyclable materials, or energy efficient production, these programs have all lead to more earth conscientious workplaces as well as saved overheard spend.

However, in an industry filled with automation and machinery, the thought of going green might seem like a faraway dream. Luckily, new innovations in conveyor technologies have led to the possibility of greener business practices in the fields of materials handling and automation.

What Does Going Green In Conveyors Mean?

For any industry, going green can be interpreted in different ways, but for those in the materials handling industry, going green consists of minimising the amount of energy and materials being used in our systems. It also consists of ensuring our material handling equipment and systems positively affect employees. This means all machinery should be safe, low noise, and operate as cleanly as possible.

The Cost Concern

While going green might be a possibility, many businesses ask if the investment in green material handling initiatives is really worth the price and if it will eventually save money. There are several ways to look at a green investment. In some cases, a business might be able to afford a new, more eco-friendly system. In other cases, a new motor can be enough to save on energy costs and establish an eco-friendly business plan. Whatever an organisation’s situation might be, we will explore a few ways in which going green with conveyors can save money.

Eco-Friendly Conveyor Systems

There are a few ways to compare conveyor options and determine which one will take an organization in an eco-friendly direction. Organizations prioritizing green initiatives might want to overhaul existing systems for something more earth conscientious. If this is the case, there are several options to compare. For example, when considering belt conveyors, you might find that a narrow belt conveyor performs the same amount of sortation per minute as well as have the same initial investment cost as other systems, while cutting energy use significantly. Other items to compare and consider in conveyor sortation systems can include how much materials are needed, whether or not a system requires lower maintenance over another conveyor, and if it provides low noise for employee safety. Each of these meets the criteria of going green.

One of our recent projects was to design and install a system for a client which would be able to convey and transfer containers of fragranced oils which are open so need to be treated with care.

Our team worked together to produced a 24 VDC powered roller conveyor combined with a goods lift which allows zero pressure accumulation of the containers of oils. The system has been designed to work in a smooth and controlled manner so that the oils do not spill whilst in transit.

Chain Driven Roller Conveyors

The Chain Driven Roller Conveyor or Pallet Roller Conveyor is the most robust and heavy duty of the powered conveyor series, and is predominantly used for heavier products such as pallet/drum handling and storage, where the product is usually fed onto the conveyor by a machine or fork truck.

Powered Roller Conveyor systems comprise various components that are designed for both heavy duty usage and flexibility. They consist of sprocketed thick walled rollers, chain to chain or tangential (one common chain) drive mechanism, a fully enclosed side frame and an external shaft mounted motor.

Here are some of our most recent chain driven roller conveyors which have been installed with our customers.

Gravity Roller Conveyors from Mobility Engineering

Posted by Sarah Bardsley on Friday, 22 February 2019 at 16:19:41

Filed under: Gravity, Business, Videos, Industry

Gravity Roller Conveyors are one of the most useful, popular and, perhaps, one of the most basic and hard wearing conveyors designed by Mobility Engineering. They can be used in so many different areas, such as for conveying trays, slave boards, cardboard boxes, plastic totes or, basically, anything with a plastic bottom. They will easily and simply transport products from A to B without any form of power!

Yes, gravity roller conveyors use the force of gravity to move products, keeping everything simple and extremely cost effective. Products can be freewheeled by hand or a slight decline can be introduced to allow the products to fall over the length of the conveyor.

Because Gravity Roller Conveyors are extremely modular they can be utilised in many ways. They can form a crucial role when linked to the end of a powered system, for such purposes as packing and accumulation, or they can actually form full production lines, such as PC Assembly, Bedding, Industrial Batteries, etc.

Here are some of our gravity roller conveyors from Mobility Engineering in action!

Gravity Conveyors and Flat Bottomed Boxes

Posted by Sarah Bardsley on Tuesday, 22 January 2019 at 13:51:08

Filed under: Conveyors, Gravity, Business, Videos

One of our most successful and popular conveyors is the non-powered gravity roller conveyor, and we have a great video here showing the gravity roller conveyor in action. One very useful and interesting point about these particular conveyors is how they are used with boxes and totes! Anything which does not have a flat and level bottom can be a problem with a gravity roller conveyr as can be seen below. See how the "good box" glides easily and quickly along the rollers, whilst a more battered and mishapen box will bump between the rollers and even come to a standstill.

Gravity roller conveyors can still be used to transport items which are odd shapes or in bags as long as these can be put into suitable boxes or flat bottomed totes.

One of the best ways we have found to showcase our bespoke conveyor designs is by creating You Tube video content of our conveyors. Our team started creating video content of our conveyor systems as they were completing the designs and testing them in-house at our factory in Cheshire, prior to the conveyors being transferred to the client's premises. The Mobility Engineering You Tube channel has grown over the last couple of years and we enjoy putting out designs online. Much of our video content also shows our conveyor designs installed and working at clients' premises, which is great to see.

Installing Multiple Conveyors

Posted by Sarah Bardsley on Thursday, 13 December 2018 at 14:16:35

Filed under: PVC/PU, Rollers, Lineshaft, Business, Videos, Applications

Often when the Mobility Engineering team are asked to work with a client, it will involve designing and installing more than one kind of conveyor. This particular client required a number of conveyors to move products between different floors and areas.

After a full overhaul and redesign of their conveyor systems, the client was installed with:

  1. An interfloor belt conveyor with both lineshaft and gravity roller conveyors
  2. Lineshaft powered roller conveyors
  3. Modular belt and pvc belt conveyors (part of which were also installed with grip tops as they were used on a decline).

The video below shows the variety of different conveyors that can be combined together within a manufacturing space to support production line processes.

Who We Are and What We Do

Posted by Sarah Bardsley on Wednesday, 12 December 2018 at 20:43:28

Filed under: Videos, General, Marketing, Case Studies

Mobility Engineering have been producing conveyors and conveyor systems since 1974 - which is over 44 years in the business!

We design, develop, manufacture, install and commission conveyors and material handling systems from our purpose built factory. Our talented team of engineers, designers and project managers deliver bespoke solutions to suit a variety of customers from a wide range of industries. Our full drawing/design office produces full working drawings, prior to any product/conveyor being manufactured, which offers the versatility of being able to offer more bespoke designs and layouts. Coupled with this, is our in-house machining shop and control design engineers, who are able to offer the control cabinet and full logic/software control system.

Generally (or more simplistically) conveyors and conveyor systems can be broken down into two distinct divisions - powered and non-powered.

Non-powered conveyors are gravity conveyors, therefore, relying on gravity to get from A to B (either horizontally, by human resources pushing, or via a decline, so the product moves under its own weight). Being non-powered means you simply cannot control the movement/flow.

Powered conveyors, on the other hand, are much more reliable and versatile with regards control and process flow. Being powered, you are in control of how and how fast the product goes from A to B, plus it can have the added benefit of accumulation. Examples of powered conveyors are:- 1) Belt Conveyor (Fabric), 2) Belt Conveyor - (Plastic Modular), 3) Powered Roller Conveyor (Lineshaft), 4) Powered Roller Conveyor (Chain Driven), 5) Slat Conveyor (Acetal - Plastic), 6) Slat Conveyor (Stainless Steel), 7) Chain Conveyor, 8) Magnetic Conveyor
